INSPIRATION – SHADOW

“To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event.”
Henri Cartier-Bresson

THE TEN SHOT ULTIMATUM – LONDON PROJECT

Gary and I run a Facebook group named THE PHOTOGRAPHY ISSUE. The purpose of the group is to support others to push their photography and attitude towards it. In February 2012, Gary designed a project in alignment with this. We accrued three other photographers, advised them to buy travelcards, arranged to meet them outside St Pauls station at one thirty and handed each of them a brown envelope before we went our separate ways. The Bourne…Ultimatum??

**Please Note – I was using a 20mm (wide) lens on this project for the entirety. The 5 bonus shots were trying!**

The text began:

“Dear Participant

The purpose of this project is to push yourself so that you have a PHOTOGRAPHERS experience of stepping outside your comfort zone. My experience is that the more daring I am with my approach to photography … the better photographs I take as a consequence”

INSTRUCTIONS:

From ST PAULS

(ONCE YOU LEAVE ST PAULS YOU WILL NOT COMMUNICATE WITH ANY OTHER PARTICIPANT BEFORE YOU TAKE YOUR FINAL SHOT)

SHOT ONE: Take the tube to OXFORD CIRCUS STATION. Wait until 14:05 and take a picture on the platform. You have 5 minutes to take the shot and include a person in the shot. ”

“SHOT TWO: Get back on the tube and head to TOTTENHAM COURT ROAD. Leave the station and take a PICTURE from outside TCR station. Include proof of the station in the shot. As soon as you have taken the shot return to the UNDERGROUND. Stay on the TCR CENTRAL LINE platform until 14:35.”

“SHOT THREE: At 14:35 Exit the station and HEAD down Charring Cross Road toward TRAFALGAR SQUARE ON FOOT. Take a SHOT in the Square.”

“SHOT FOUR: Take a SHOT ON a PLATFORM of MARBLE ARCH STATION. You may do this asap after your reach the station.”

“YOU WILL NOW BREAK FROM the FIVE MISSION IMAGES TO GET YOUR FIVE BONUS IMAGES (SEE BELOW). However you must remember to be at LIVERPOOL STREET STATION to get your last mission shot at 16:30. YOU SHOULD NOT ARRIVE at the station before 16:30.

5 BONUS IMAGES

During the project you are asked also to take FIVE BONUS MISSION IMAGES.

These images MUST BE TAKEN ON the LONDON UNDERGROUND and on A TUBE. Each image must include at least one person.  They must not be posed images. Instead they will be STREET PHOTOGRAPHY style shots. I don’t care how you get these images. I simply want you to push yourself, to be daring, and to really go for it so that when you post these images in the group you get to feel great about yourself. You MAY not ask for permission from anybody to take the shot.”

“SHOT FIVE – LIVERPOOL STREET

(after you have taken you 5 BONUS SHOTS) you will head to LIVERPOOL STREET STATION. Exit the underground and head up to the main departure area. You should now head upstairs for a high vantage point and, aiming down, take your last photograph.”
