The Wedding Spotlight – Poppy Dover
I’m so excited to share this incredible woman’s work with you today. I first came across Poppy when we were researching for this feature and then had the pleasure of seeing one of her designs in the flesh at Fiona & Duncan’s wedding in August. J’adore!
Take it away Poppy…
My name is Poppy Dover and I own a namesake bridalwear brand that specialises in creating bridalwear collections with a difference. I have designed a series of mix and match separates that can be combined to suit the brides needs, shape and style. I take traditional bridalwear and turn it on its head, creating luxury items with a difference. They’re modern, elegant, romantic and quietly eccentric.
Job satisfaction is what drives me and working with brides is a dream. Absorbing their energy and feeding of their love gives me such a high I cant tell you. I get so much out of it! Having worked in fashion for 8 years prior to starting up my brand 18 months ago I loved having the ability to create a product that was not just beautiful but becomes a part of who the wearer is and there is nothing like bridalwear to symbolise the unique style, but not just that, it is the meaning of the day as well. Im honoured to be a part of that.
I wake up around 8.00am and do nothing before I check urgent emails and read the news. The view from my flat is unreal and looks out over the Thames so I sit and watch the world go by as I eat breakfast and plan my day. My studio is a 15 minute walk down the Kings Road so I usually grab a coffee from Beaufort House on the way and set myself up for the day at around 10am. The day usually consists of a meeting of some sort, either fittings, castings, designing or planning. If I have appointments the day goes fast and it can be 4.00pm before I’ve even thought about lunch but fortunately Megan’s is on hand nearby. Last appointments are at 6.00pm so depending on how I’m feeling I either relax in the evening with friends or head out for a run in Battersea Park which tends to be more of a slow stroll but its good for me to clear my head and switch off. Then I’m back on my laptop until about midnight…There is always more to do!
My favourite memory from working in this field so far was at The National Wedding Show in February this year. I showed part of my second collection on the runway and it was such a special moment. For many years now I’ve been to that show by circumstance; accompanying my sisters or friends getting married. I remember a few years back I sat there ‘live sketching’ the looks as I watched the designers collections walk out one by one. I never thought back then that 5 years down the line my name would appear on the back wall and my designs would be the ones everyone would look at and admire. Amazing really.
I have spoken to many brides and the top tip that has stayed with me is… “take a private moment out of the evening ceremony alone together”, nobody else. Walk, look back and listen to the sound of your guests celebrating your love, steal a kiss and then take a deep breath. Its that moment when the dream becomes a reality and you can appreciate it together.
