5 Favourite Outdoor Locations for Family Photos in and Around Derbyshire

Not everyone wants their family photos in a studio, and thankfully, living in Derbyshire means we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor spots with big skies, soft light, and space for kids to run wild.

Here are five of my go-to locations for relaxed, natural family photography in and around Derbyshire. These are places I’ve loved shooting in, where the light is beautiful and the atmosphere is calm.

1. Foremark Reservoir, South Derbyshire

If you’re after wide open skies, still water, and golden-hour magic, this is your spot. There’s a beachy feel in parts, woodland paths to explore, and plenty of space to roam. I love how varied this location is for family sessions, especially for toddlers who like to dip their toes or throw pebbles.

🗺️ Tip: The light here is dreamy just before sunset. Bring wellies if it’s been raining.

2. Hicks Lodge, near Ashby de la Zouch

Technically Leicestershire, but close enough to count. Hicks Lodge is a firm favourite. It’s a peaceful forest space with wide gravel paths, open fields, and a brilliant mix of trees and open sky. It’s ideal for families who like a bit of walking but want to avoid crowds.

🗺️ Tip: Early mornings here feel magical, especially in spring and autumn when the mist hangs low.

3. Shipley Country Park

With 700 acres of woodland, lakes, and meadows, Shipley is a dream location for natural family photos. There’s space for big energy, quiet corners for cuddles, and the kind of backdrop that looks beautiful without trying too hard.

🗺️ Tip: Bring snacks, it’s big!

4. Elvaston Castle Country Park

If your vibe is more moody trees and romantic landscapes, Elvaston delivers. It’s gothic and slightly wild, with beautiful architecture, woodland walks, and hidden corners that feel cinematic without being formal.

🗺️ Tip: Ideal for autumn, the colours here are something else.

5. Cannock Chase (Bonus Pick, Worth the Drive)

Okay, so this one isn’t Derbyshire, but it’s too good not to mention. Cannock Chase has pine trees, open hills, and golden grasses that glow in the right light. It feels like you’ve driven hours north when you’re really just outside the Midlands.

🗺️ Tip: If you’re up for a little adventure, it’s well worth it.
P.S. The below photos are little snaps of my boys, taken on my disposable-vibe digital camera, which I love for nostalgic frames!
