Gentle, Honest & Real
Let’s be honest… the newborn days are a blur. You’re healing, adjusting, not sleeping, and suddenly everyone wants to visit and pass the baby around like a party trick.
A photoshoot might feel like just another thing to organise, but what if it wasn’t?
What if it felt like a quiet pause? No studio lights. No pressure to perform. Just you and your baby, at home, in your own rhythm, and someone gently documenting it without making it a “thing.”
That’s what I offer.
Why Choose In-Home Newborn Photography in Derby?
Because leaving the house with a newborn is a military operation.
In-home sessions mean:
You don’t have to pack a bag or time a feed
You get to stay in loungewear if you want to
Your baby sets the pace
You’re surrounded by your own comfort and calm
I’ll quietly capture the details you don’t want to forget, the wrinkly fingers, the stretch and yawn, the way they curl into you when they settle. All without dragging you out into the world before you’re ready.

Newborn Photoshoot FAQs
-
Having photographed over 15 babies in my studio over the course of 6 months, alongside more babes at their family home over the last ten years, I now only capture newborn photography in the comfort of your family home or on location.
I find that parents (and therefore babes!) are way more relaxed having all their home comforts close to hand, and we can get a range of honest and natural memories around your home; offering a variety of images.

I would always recommend lighter colours (whites, greys, beiges) with no obvious patterns and it would work super well if your partner was in similar tones.
If you’re feeling up to it, some skin-on-skin photographs just in pretty underwear, or even breastfeeding, can capture your new family beautifully.

Just a simple white all-in-one is perfect.
I have a newborn wardrobe with carefully designed, neutral outfits for you to choose from too.
It's also nice getting some of baby just in a nappy for those tiny close ups of fingers, toes, nose, rolls!

Google tells me that the best time for newborn sessions are between 1 and 2 weeks, but they change so fast at that stage that really, any time you are all feeling ready is the best time.
I have had couples that wanted an early newborn shoot, but then struggled with breastfeeding or recovery, and the images we got of 8-12 week old babies were just as special.
I have a blog post here on the best time for a newborn photoshoot in Derby, which might be helpful!

I do offer basic retouching of images - only where I think it won’t take away from the natural beauty pictured - to include skin smoothing and blemish removals.

Preparing Your Home for a Newborn Session
First things first, you don’t need a show home. Your baby doesn’t care, and neither do I.
When I arrive, I’ll look for the best light and the calmest corners. That might be your bedroom, the living room, or by a big window. I’ll gently move the odd toy or coffee cup if needed, but otherwise, your home is perfect as it is.
If you’d like more guidance, I’ve written a full blog on this: How to Prepare Your Home for a Family Photoshoot.
I also have a blog on How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session, which you should definitely check out for helpful tips.
Props & Accessories For Creative Derby Newborn Photography
My natural style is dedicated to capturing your newborn as they are, simply and beautifully. I have a range of blankets/wraps (whites and greys) available for use, plus a shusher machine. Because I capture you in the comfort of your own home, I find babe is way more relaxed because parents are.
If you have special items you would like included; for example a knitted blanket from a relative, or a teddy that was yours, please let’s make sure they are to hand!
Lighting and Editing Newborn Photos
I use soft, non invasive natural light where possible, or very gentle bounced flash if required.
My style is very clean and simplistic, and I offer both colour and black and white versions of photographs that work well in both. I do basic retouching should your newborn have any obvious milk spots, for example, but I don’t edit to the point of it being unrealistic. You want to cherish your babe as they truly are!
