What to Wear for Your Family or Newborn Photography Session in Derbyshire
Why outfits matter in family photography
When I photograph families, I want the focus to be on your connection, not on clothes that distract. Busy patterns and very bright colours can be tricky as they pull attention away from faces and even shift tones in editing. Neutrals like whites, creams, greys, beige, navy, light blue, or black always work beautifully.
Do not dress in a way that does not feel like you
It would feel silly to capture your family naturally if you are wearing clothes you would never usually wear. The best photographs come when you feel comfortable and like yourselves. Aim for a slightly smarter version of your everyday style rather than something out of character.
Outfit changes for variety
I often suggest families bring a second layer or outfit. For example:
Women might start in a dress with tights, then switch to a baggy jumper and jeans.
Men could wear a shirt with trousers, then add a sweater or swap into a more casual layer.
Children could begin in something a little smarter, then change into leggings or joggers with a cosy jumper.
These simple changes give you two looks without needing a full wardrobe overhaul.
Coordinating as a family (not matching)
Matching outfits can sometimes look forced. Instead, think about complimenting each other. Neutral tones in different textures and fabrics look warm and cohesive. For children, try to avoid big logos or cartoon prints that will date quickly.
What to wear for newborn sessions
Newborn sessions at home are all about comfort. Soft neutral loungewear works beautifully, and for babies I always suggest simple onesies or plain wraps. Busy patterns can swallow tiny details like fingers and toes. Layers like muslin blankets or knitted cardigans add texture and variety without overwhelming.
What to avoid wearing in photos
Very bright colours like neon
Large logos or bold text
Busy patterns that clash with other family members
Clothes that feel too formal or unlike your usual selves
Final thoughts
Your clothes should never steal the show. They are simply the backdrop for your love and your connection. If you are in doubt, stick to soft neutrals, add layers, and remember that comfort and authenticity will always win in the photographs.

My go to on the High Street would be H&M or Zara, especially Zara’s Timelesz collection which is stunning. For baby outfits I love the independent shop Hank Knitwear.
