10 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Family Photoshoots

If you have ever typed “family photographer near me” into Google, you will know how many options pop up. Choosing the right photographer can feel overwhelming, and once you do, the questions start to pile up. What should we wear? Where should we go? How long does a session take?

I have been photographing families across Derbyshire for over a decade, and I have truly heard every question under the sun. Below, I have gathered the ten most common ones, with my honest answers to help you feel prepared and excited for your own family session.

What should we wear for a family photoshoot?

This is always the first question. My advice is simple: wear clothes that feel like you. Neutral colours and soft tones photograph beautifully, but the most important thing is comfort.

Coordinating is great, but matching is not necessary. Think along the lines of creams, beiges, muted blues, greys, or earthy tones. Avoid big logos or overly busy patterns that might distract from your faces.

I would really advise against super bright colours, as they can change depending on the editing style I use. Some ideal examples of outfits are shown below!

Top tip: bring layers. A jumper, cardigan, or scarf can change the feel of your photos in seconds without needing a full outfit change.

Where is the best location for family photos in Derbyshire?

The location depends on your family’s personality. Many of my sessions take place at home, which is perfect for a relaxed, storytelling style. Your sofa, kitchen table, or garden all hold more meaning than you might realise.

Outdoors is another beautiful option, especially in Derbyshire where we have so much variety. Think autumn woods, rolling fields, or riverside walks. If you love the Peak District or even a local park, I can recommend plenty of hidden gems. I have a blog post here including my favourite locations for family photos around Derbyshire.

What happens if it rains on the day of our photoshoot?

This is the UK, so let’s be honest, the weather can be unpredictable. If we are shooting at home, it makes no difference at all. If we are planning an outdoor session, we have two options: embrace it with umbrellas and wellies or reschedule.

My sessions are flexible. If the weather is truly unworkable, I will always find another date with you.

How long does a family photoshoot take?

Sessions usually last between 60 minutes and 2 hours. That gives us time to settle in, let children warm up, and capture a variety of moments without anyone feeling rushed.

I do not set a strict timer. If we need to stop for snacks or have a little run around halfway through, we absolutely will.

How do you get children to behave during a family photoshoot?

Here is the secret: I don’t expect them to. Children do not need to sit still or smile on command. In fact, the best photos happen when they are busy being themselves.

I will chat with them, play simple games, or suggest fun little challenges like finding the biggest stick or seeing who can run the fastest. The goal is to create an experience that feels like play, not a photoshoot.

Can we include grandparents in a family photoshoot?

Yes. Some of my favourite sessions are multi generational. Whether it is grandparents joining for a few frames, or a full extended family gathering, it is always worth capturing those connections.

If you are planning a larger group, let me know in advance so I can recommend locations that have enough space and flexibility for everyone.

Do you edit or retouch family photos?

My editing style is natural and timeless. I do not heavily airbrush or change the way people look, but I will gently retouch if needed. That might mean softening blemishes, removing a scratch, or adjusting light so everyone looks their best.

The goal is always to reflect your family honestly while presenting your photos in the most flattering way possible.

How do we prepare our home for a family photoshoot?

This one deserves its own blog post (and I have written exactly that here), but in short: please don’t panic about tidying.

I will use the areas with the best natural light, often near a window or in the main living space. A quick clear of coffee cups or laundry piles is helpful, but you don’t need a show home. Real life photographs beautifully.

How much does a family photoshoot cost in Derbyshire?

My family photography sessions range from £250 to £350 depending on the session length and what is included. That price always covers the session itself, your edited gallery, and a selection of downloads.

I also offer little mini sessions throughout the year. These are shorter sessions and cost £75 for 5 images. They are very popular and the best way to hear about them first is to join my mailing list.

I believe in transparent pricing. You will never be pressured into hidden extras or unexpected upsells. If you want to order prints or albums later, I can guide you through that process too.

What if my children will not sit still during a photoshoot?

Then you will get the most natural, joy filled gallery of all. Children are not supposed to sit still for an hour, and your session is not about perfect behaviour.

I encourage movement, play, and interaction. Whether that is a tickle fight on the sofa, climbing a fallen tree, or racing through long grass, those are the moments that tell the real story of your family.
