Preparing for Your Maternity Session at Home

There’s something really special about maternity sessions at home… I think it’s because it’s where you likely feel most sanctuary at a time where you might not be totally feeling yourself physically. That was my experience, anyway. I think I spent about 3 hours in the bath each day just to be away from the world (and close to water!)

You’re not trying to impress anyone or pretend your life looks like an interiors magazine. You’re just in your space, doing life, with a bump that’s growing by the day.

These sessions are about that in-between bit. The quiet. The waiting. The “what’s about to happen” part. I want you to look back and remember how this season felt, not how tidy your cushions were.

Sending Some Inspiration

If you’ve already got a few photos saved that you love, send them my way. I’ve got a Pinterest board here filled with bump photos that feel soft and natural — just a starting point if you want a bit of guidance.

It’s never about copying anyone else’s photos, but if you can show me what makes you think yes, that’s my kind of vibe, it really helps me get a feel for what will make you comfortable.

Keeping Things Simple

Please don’t deep clean your whole house before I come. Honestly, there’s no need. A light tidying away of any ‘stuff’ is appreciated, just so it’s less time spent editing out random mugs in photoshop ;)

Just pick one or two little spaces that feel light and calm; your bedroom, the living room, maybe just simply making a cup of tea in the kitchen.

I can work with one window if that’s all we’ve got. I promise. You don’t need a show home. You just need you.

What to Wear

I always say the best outfits are the ones that feel like you, but with just a touch more intention. Think comfortable, relaxed, and easy to move in.

Some things that always photograph beautifully:

  • An oversized shirt worn open over joggers or soft pants

  • Jeans or leggings with a fitted vest or crop top that shows bump shape

  • A simple dress that clings nicely over your bump

  • Or just a favourite bra and joggers for something soft and real

Have a few options set aside. You might start in something slightly smarter, then switch to something more relaxed. A chunky cardigan or jumper is always lovely for texture.

Including the People (and Pets) You Love

If you’ve got a partner, kids, or a dog who insists on being in the middle of everything, let’s get them involved too. I’ll always make time for a mix of moments; some of you on your own, some together.

I love when partners are part of it, even if they’re camera shy. You making a coffee together, a cuddle on the sofa, hands on bump. It’s all part of your story.

And if your dog wants to be in the photos? Even better.

Let It Be Natural

I’ll guide you here and there but nothing will ever feel staged. I’ll probably ask you to sit by the window or walk slowly through a room, but you’ll never have to hold an awkward pose or force a smile.

If it helps, just pretend I’m not there. That’s when the magic happens, when you forget the camera, and it’s just you and your bump and the people you love.

When the Light Isn’t Great

If you’re looking around your house thinking “but it’s so dark in here,” don’t panic. I can do an entire shoot using one window if I need to. I’ve spent years finding light in tricky spots.

I’ll use different lenses and angles to make sure your home feels warm and beautiful… no matter the weather or the space.

Taking Your Maternity Photos Outdoors

And if you’re up for a little fresh air, I always love to finish a session outdoors. Even just stepping into the garden, a nearby park, or somewhere that feels peaceful to you can give such a lovely change of pace.

Beaches, fields, or open spaces work beautifully, especially towards sunset when the light gets softer and everything feels a bit slower.

You don’t need to pose or plan anything fancy; a walk, a laugh, a hand on your bump; that’s more than enough.

Final Thoughts

The best maternity sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about honesty. About creating something you’ll look back on and say, that was us, right before everything changed.

So wear what feels good, keep the kettle warm, and let’s make something beautiful together.
