The Donut Club — Product Photography, Derby

Clean, simple, let the donuts do the talking

The Donut Club have a factory in Derby and a shop in Brighton; a proper independent brand with a real following and a new range that needed to look the part online. The brief was straightforward; clean white flatlay product photography, new range, nothing fussy.

Which is exactly how I like it.

There's a temptation with product photography to over-complicate things; too many props, too much styling, backgrounds that say more about the photographer's taste than the product itself. For a brand like The Donut Club where the product is already visually brilliant; colourful, glossy, the kind of thing that stops a scroll without any help; the job is mostly to get out of the way and let it be what it is.

White background. Good light. The right angle. Done.

Why white backgrounds work for product photography

White and light backgrounds do a specific job that styled shoots sometimes can't; they make the product the only thing in the frame. For e-commerce, online menus, social media grids and anywhere a product needs to look consistent and clean across multiple images; a white background is almost always the right answer.

It also travels well. A white background flatlay works on a website, in a press release, on a marketplace listing, in a paid ad. You shoot it once and it works everywhere without looking out of place.

For The Donut Club specifically; a brand that operates across multiple locations and needs consistent imagery that works whether it's going on their Brighton shop socials or their Derby factory website; that consistency matters.

The shoot

New range, Derby factory, white flatlay style throughout. The brief was to make the range look launch-ready; clean, commercial, consistent.

Product photography beyond Derby

The Donut Club is a good example of something worth saying clearly; I'm based in Derbyshire but product photography travels.

If your brand is based in the Midlands, or you need a photographer who can come to your production facility or factory wherever that is; get in touch → and let's work out whether it's doable.
