Backhaus, Coventry — Coffee Shop & Bakery Photography
A coffee shop that took its food seriously
Backhaus was a Coventry coffee shop run by Jess & Dan, with a genuine passion for what came out of the kitchen. Fresh bread baked in house, a brunch menu that went well beyond the standard eggs and toast, and bread making classes for anyone who wanted to learn the craft properly. The kind of independent that makes a food scene worth having.
The brief covered two distinct things; brunch menu photography for the café side of the business, and bread photography to support the bread making classes. Same kitchen, same ethos, two slightly different visual needs.
The shoot
Brunch photography needs warmth; it's morning food, comfort food, the kind of thing that makes someone want to leave the house on a Sunday. The Backhaus menu had real personality to it so the job was mostly about finding the right light and the right angle to let that come through without overcomplicating it.
The bread photography was a different challenge; bread is tactile and textural in a way that most food isn't, and getting that across in a flat image takes a bit more thought. The crust, the crumb, the weight of a proper loaf; those are the things that make someone want to buy it or turn up to a class to learn how to make it.
We worked through both briefs in a single session; planned in advance, shot efficiently, no time wasted.
Food photography in Coventry
Backhaus is a good example of something worth saying directly; I'm based in Derbyshire but I work across the Midlands and Coventry is well within that range. If you're running a coffee shop, café or bakery in Coventry or the surrounding area and your photography isn't keeping up with your food; get in touch → and let's sort it out.
Independent coffee shops and cafés are some of my favourite places to shoot; there's usually a real story behind the food and a real person who cares deeply about getting it right. That's what I'm there to capture.
See pricing → — for most coffee shops and cafés the two hour shoot at £250 covers everything you need.
For Derbyshire based businesses the local rate applies; see the full breakdown →
