Why Choosing a Meaningful Location Makes Family Photos Extra Special

I have had the joy of photographing Abi and Rob through so many chapters of their life together; their wedding in Thailand, a maternity session on the Kent coast, and now, with their little boy Denver, a family shoot that took us to Margate.

We started at the Turner Contemporary art gallery, wandered the streets of Margate, and then finished with some time at home. On paper, it might sound like a mix of random spots, but in reality it was them. They love art, they love the sea, they love their home, so of course those places felt like the right backdrop.

That is the thing with family photography. It does not always need to be in a meadow or woodland (although I do love those too). Sometimes the best photos come from choosing a location that actually means something to you. Maybe it is the park you always go to on Sundays, your favourite café, or the street you walk every day with the buggy. When your children look back on these images in years to come, those familiar places will feel like part of the story.

If you are thinking about booking a session, start by asking: where do we feel most like ourselves? That could be your home, a city you love, or a wild corner of Derbyshire countryside. The location is less about the perfect backdrop and more about grounding your family memories in a place that matters.
