What are the best alternatives to family photography studios near me?

When most people type family photography studios near me into Google, they are imagining one of those classic setups. White backdrops, props, a studio full of lights, maybe even matching outfits with forced smiles. For some families, that works fine, but I know from my own experience (having run two studios myself in the past) that it is not the right fit for everyone (or, indeed, for me!).

I believe families deserve photographs that feel like them. That is why I moved away from studio work and now focus on in-home and outdoor sessions here in Derbyshire. These alternatives are not just easier on children and parents, but they also create photographs you will love looking back on for years to come.

Why in-home family sessions are the best alternative to studios

At home, children are in their element. They can play in their own rooms, curl up on their favourite sofa, or run around the kitchen while you all bake something together. The pressure is off. You do not need to tidy everything within an inch of its life, I promise I am not photographing your mess. I am photographing your people.

Some of my favourite sessions have included children showing me their bedrooms, proudly bringing me their favourite toys, or cuddling up on their parents’ bed in fresh white sheets. These are the little things that make your family unique, and they would never be captured under bright studio lights.

Why outdoor family photography feels so natural

If you live in Derbyshire, you already know how lucky we are with scenery. We have endless woods, fields, rivers, and open skies that make the perfect backdrop for family photographs. Children thrive outdoors… they can run, explore, and be themselves without being told to sit still.

When I photograph families outdoors, I usually encourage them to go for a little walk, let the children collect leaves or play simple games, and just enjoy being outside together. The best photographs come from these in-between moments, when you are not even aware of the camera, just enjoying each other.

Other families love sessions at Calke Abbey, Elvaston Castle, or even their local park. It does not need to be grand. The most important thing is that it feels relaxed.

What about the hidden costs of studio photography?

This is a big one. Studios often advertise very low booking fees — sometimes as little as £50 — which sounds like a bargain. But what they do not tell you is that the actual images cost a huge amount to buy afterwards. You might find yourself being asked to spend hundreds, if not thousands, to get the photographs you love.

Many parents tell me they felt pressured to say yes because they were shown the images in a sales meeting straight after their shoot, and it was impossible to walk away.

That will never happen with me. My pricing is completely transparent: sessions range from £250 to £350, and the digital images are included. There are no nasty surprises. Sometimes I also run mini sessions for £100, which are perfect if you just want a handful of photographs for Christmas cards or gifts.

How lifestyle photography captures real connection

In a studio, the focus is often on getting the perfect smile. In lifestyle photography, the focus is on capturing connection. I will encourage you to tickle your children, snuggle them, or play little games that bring out their personalities. These are the moments that feel timeless.

Imagine looking back in twenty years, do you want to see a photograph of your child sitting stiffly on a stool, or a photograph of them laughing while they climb into your lap?

The flexibility of at-home sessions

Another reason families love in-home photography is flexibility. Babies can nap or feed when they need to. Toddlers can wander off for a break and then rejoin when they are ready. There is no pressure to keep everyone performing for the camera.

And if you are worried about what to do during the session, I have written a guide with 10 activities you can do during your family photoshoot at home. These little prompts keep things flowing and give you photographs that feel genuine.

Outdoor sessions with children of all ages

Outdoor shoots are brilliant because they grow with your family. Toddlers love exploring, older children enjoy being silly or adventurous, and even teenagers usually relax more outdoors than in a studio. There is always something to do, whether that is kicking a football, blowing bubbles, or walking the dog.

If you need inspiration, I have a blog sharing my favourite outdoor family photoshoot locations in Derbyshire.

The bottom line

If you are searching for family photography studios near me but you want something more honest and relaxed, think about in-home or outdoor lifestyle sessions. They are fun, flexible, and full of heart.

No forced smiles. No pressure. No hidden costs. Just photographs of your family as you are, right now.
